Quilt Block Steps
When you look at the quilt you want to make you will need to refer to my Quilt Block Steps to see the order in which you need to make the shortcut blocks into a quilt block.
Here I am going to show you how I make a quilt block using my shortcut methods.
first of all you can use any method of construction you like but I think my shortcut methods are quick and easy to use.
1.pick the quilt you want to make.
2.choose the colors you want to use.
keep in mind most of my designs require deep contrast for the best outcome
3.learn to make the shortcut blocks needed to make the quilt you chose
you will find these in the tabs at the top of the page.
I highly recommend you practice making the block with scraps before you cut any fabric.
4. look at the quilt directions and find the blocks that you need to make.
make as many of them as you need. Make sure you have the colors in the right position on each block
5. look at the layout of the 9 patch.
I like to show you the 9 patch so it is less intimidating. Once you have made one 9 patch you just need to do it again 3 more times. so you have four 9 patches.
This also helps to keep your sections the right size so everything comes out right
6. now sew those four 9 patches together into the quilt block.
Easy huh? Now a few troubleshooting suggestions
1. Iron everything flat as it can get! the flatter it is the better it is to work with.
2. I prefer to iron my seams open. but you are welcome to use whatever works for you.
3. I highly recommend measuring every time you join 2 blocks and/or sections together. this will prevent getting to the end and finding out your quilt block is way out of line. The time to fix this is when you are joining the blocks not after the whole quilt block is done.
4. I usually spray my quilt block with sizing and iron it when I am done. I like a flat quilt block to work with. it won't stretch or be out of shape this way.
5. If you find you have trouble handling your fabric you can use sizing to make it stiff so it is easier to handle.
